ASCAP Foundation Awards in New York

I was in NYC this past week to receive the ASCAP Foundation’s Michelle and Dean Kay Award for an outstanding composer from the ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop with Richard Bellis this past summer. I was thrilled to be selected among so many talented composers. Dean Kay is such a warm, and generous person. When we met during the reception, he told me the story of when he wrote “That’s Life” and Frank Sinatra propelled to amazing heights, opening so many doors for Dean. The evening was a star-studded event. Stephen Schwartz (composer for WICKED, PIPPIN, GODSPELL), Maria Schneider, and Morten Lauridsen were all there including many talented and emerging singers, songwriters, and composers. A truly memorable evening for all!

“Honor” from the film, Ode in Blood, wins a Global Music Award!

It is my distinct honor to announce that Honor from my score to the film, Ode in Blood, won a Bronze Medal at the Global Music Awards!  This cue was recorded and mixed by Les Brockmann, and features Chris Bleth on shakuhachi, MB Gordy on percussion, and Jennifer Walton on solo violin.  Very happy that our score was recognized! A big thank you to Rea Rangaka, director, and Maura Blake Kelly, producer,  for giving me the opportunity to write music for such a wonderfully-moving story. My heart-felt thank you goes to you and the entire Ode In Blood team! Check out the announcement on the Global Music Awards website! You can listen to the track on Soundcloud....

Score to “For Family’s Sake” Completed

Thanks to the opportunity from award-winning director, Sam Shaib, the score to “For Family’s Sake” is now complete and this makes our fourth collaboration.  We have developed a wonderful shorthand for achieving magical results when it comes to scoring his films. The subject matter in “For Family’s Sake” deals with controversial issue of honor in the traditional Muslim household especially when a young girl is suspected of dating someone other than a Muslim.  This film sheds light as to what occurs in such instances.  Unfortunately, tragedy, more often than not, tends to be the outcome for these poor, innocent girls who have been raised within Western society. The score at its core is very simple, and uses organic elements...

FALL IS FINALLY HERE!

Happy Fall Dear Friends! Just wanted to share some great late September news after a very hot summer! Ode In Blood received its Los Angeles premiere at the Directors Guild of America.  The venue is state-of-the-art, so the film looked incredible on the big screen, and the music sounded amazing.  Big thanks to my friends and colleagues who helped me out on the score:  Les Brockmann, scoring engineer;  Brian Cho, assistant/orchestrator/additional music; Peter Rotter, music contractor for getting me MB Gordy, an incredible percussionist who played taiko, hand percussion, shakers, and other cool African and Japanese percussion, and Chris Bleth, who played  shakuhachi and a myriad of other ethnic flutes for our score.  Also, the wonderful Jennifer Walton who...
