PERFORMANCE NOTES

Baile de las Mariposas (Dance of the Butterflies)

Throughout the Iguazú Falls National Park there are many colorful species of butterflies. This particular scene was inspired by a kaleidoscope of butterflies flying around and landing to sip some nectar from the many flora. Their delicate, aerial acrobatics felt like a dance to me, so this section should have a distinct and buoyant feel as we get to the main butterfly theme. At Rehearsal A, the vidalita appears as one of the dances. It is one of the precursors of the tango with its jaunty swagger. A delicate balance is needed between all the instruments to maintain great character and movement. Really emphasize the dramatic shift at bar 29. At bar 44, we reach the original theme used in Escenas. Definitely waltz-like in its feel, keep it light and sparkly. Also, a kaleidoscope is an appropriate name, so make sure to bring out the percussive light colors through the piece. In particular, the harp and celesta for their light, characteristic tone.
