“Ultimately, my goal with score for The American Question (TAQ) was to create an identity of unity and cohesion even though the film explores the themes of division that have plagued our country for the past several decades. The score combines propulsive electronics, violin solos (performed by Rebecca Schlappich-Charles) and intimate chamber ensembles to guide the viewer/listener as we explore the factors that led to the current deep-rooted divisions within the United States. The TAQ theme is a rising motif that goes through a series of ‘theme and variations’ throughout the arc of the film. The variations in the accompaniment allowed me to create moments of propulsion, excitement, tenderness, danger, tribalism, and much more. This was to ensure that even though what the viewer experienced involved scenes of a divided America, the score would be there to guide them towards a solution and unity once again.”
