SYNOPSIS

Caught in the gears of the 2014 US immigration crisis, when over 52,000 unaccompanied minors crossed the border, twelve-year old Ana arrives at an immigration detention center with nothing but the clothes on her back, her mute, younger brother, and a treasured music box. She soon finds that seeking safety will cost more than she bargained for.

INSPIRATION

After learning about the 52,000 unaccompanied children from Mexico and Central America who entered the United States in 2014, and seeing the harrowing images of them in immigration detention centers, I felt compelled to understand what horrors these children experienced and what it must take for them to flee their countries at the cost of leaving their families behind. It became essential for me to put a face on the asylum seeker and reveal the unfairness of the system in order to incite compassion, awareness and understanding.

PROJECT INVOLVE

Debris - Escombros was developed in Project Involve, Film Independent's signature diversity program dedicated to cultivating the careers of filmmakers from communities traditionally underrepresented in the industry. The program is a mix of writers, directors, producers, cinematographers and editors, as well as those seeking work in acquisitions, marketing, distribution and agencies.
