The film follows Roshanda as she tries to find love, so she begins looking into the occult for help, but desire can be deadly.
For the score, I worked with Desmon, my director, to include dark choral voices, aleatoric string FX, creepy drones, modern synths and electronics, and the sounds of bloody scissors cutting through paper.
How the heck did I use bloody scissors you ask? Well, when I was starting working on themes for Spider, I was visiting my parents in Florida. My nieces came over, so my mom, gave them some coloring books, paper, and a pair scissors to make paper cut-outs of animals. I was helping them cut out something, then my mom asked me a question, which distracted me, so I knicked by finger by accident! Ouch. There a little blood left on the scissors. I then closed the scissors and it made this gnarly sound, slightly different from before, and the idea clicked: “I have to incorporate this sound into the score!” I mean there was blood on it already — similar to what Roshanda is seeking in the film (no, I won’t spoil it for you! haha). So, I took some audio samples of the sound of these bloody scissors on my iPhone, then when I returned back to Los Angeles got to work.
All of these elements helped create a wholly unique score that encapsulates the spirit and ritualistic nature of the main character, Roshanda/Ro.
